If you work in an office, chances are you sit at your desk all day, typing at your computer. Have you ever thought about your posture as you sit there, day in, day out? Most people don’t, and regret it somewhere down the line. Why is this so?

Maintaining a good posture is extremely important to prevent aches, pains, and health problems down the line. Many office workers complain of shoulder aches, numb legs, back pains, and so on, so much so that it’s starting to become normal to experience such discomfort.

Most of the time, these aches and pains are brushed off as a side effect of a desk job, which cannot be prevented. This is in no way true. If you adopt a good posture when you are working your job, you can prevent these discomforts, as well as prevent them from turning into more painful health problems.

These are painful conditions that are difficult to treat, but can be prevented by maintaining a good posture consistently. Of course, making good posture a habit will take some effort. That being said, it’s not that difficult. The first thing you should work on is how you sit in your chair. Having good chair posture means you should sit up straight with your shoulders back, abdomen pulled in, and chin tucked. Your chair should also not be too low or too high; it should be just low enough for you to place your feet on the floor while keeping your knees level with your hips. If the chair is too high and can’t be adjusted, then place a footrest on the floor.

The next thing you should watch out for is how you position your wrists when you type and use a mouse. The monitor of your computer should also be placed at an appropriate distance from your eyes, while being positioned in such a way that lets you look down slightly at the screen.

It may also be worth talking to your boss about proper posture, if applicable. Make changes consciously a little by little, and the next thing you know you’ll be practicing good posture naturally. And the after-effects of that? Less aches and pains, a happier body, and a happier you.
